What is a Trusted Research Environment?

A Trusted Research Environment (TRE) is a highly secure computing environment which enables remote access to anonymised health data for approved researchers. In DPUK, this remote environment is accessed via virtual desktops where that data can never leave.

Only approved researchers will be able to access the Data Portal and will have to sign a Data Access Agreement.

All research projects which take place in the Data Portal are approved by the data owners and have to demonstrate that it is in the public benefit.

Researchers gain access to a secure virtual environment to access the data and perform their analysis where data is not allowed out.

All data is de-identified and checked to ensure that there is nothing identifying within the data such as names, addresses etc.

All results and outputs are checked before they can be allowed out of the Data Portal by two analysts to ensure no disclosive information is taken out.
